MISSION & HISTORY

Football BC is the governing body for amateur football in British Columbia. The organization was formed in 2015 and subsequently recognized by Football Canada as the sole governing body for football in British Columbia. Shortly thereafter, the government of BC recognized Football BC as the provincial sport organization for football. Football BC is a voting member of Sport BC.

Football BC is committed to leading, growing, and elevating amateur football across British Columbia by providing safe, inclusive, and high-quality opportunities for athletes, coaches, officials, and communities. We strive to foster lifelong participation, develop character and leadership through sport, and support a unified football pathway from grassroots to high-performance. Through collaboration, education, and advocacy, Football BC empowers every participant to reach their full potential while strengthening the spirit, diversity, and excellence of football in our province.

Key Dates

1861 - First documented football match (Toronto)

1873 - Formation of the original national governing body

1884 - Football Canada is formed (called initially Canadian Rugby Football Union)

1954 - BC Lions inaugural season

1958 - CFL inaugural Season

1967 - Canadian Amateur Football Association (CAFA) is formed (replacing CFRU)

1986 - CAFA adopted the marketing name Football Canada

2004 - Football Canada joins the International Federation of American Football (IFAF)

1970 - BC Amateur Football Association (BCAFA) incorporates as a provincial football body

2015 - The BC Provincial Football Association (BCPFA) is incorporated

2016 - Football Canada acknowledges the BCPFA as the football governing body in BC

2017 - viaSport recognizes the BCPFA as the Provincial Sport Organization for football

2021 – BCPFA changes its bylaws to provide clubs with direct membership

2024 - The BCPFA formally adopts the name Football British Columbia (Football BC)
